Medical workers at Kitagata Hospital in Sheema District are treating a baby boy born with a strange swelling as an extreme emergency case and have called for immediate assistance.

The baby was born at the facility a few days ago. He was born by Cesarean Section with a strange scalp swelling on the left side of the head.

Dr. Gelverse Twine, the in-charge of Shuuku health sub district that oversees Kitagata Hospital, said the baby is breathing normally and breastfeeding. He said the baby’s parent are peasants from Kabira-Mitooma district.

He says that during her antenatal period, Evas Tukamushaba, 24, (mother), attended check-ups 3 times. “She attended the first antenatal at 20 weeks, received and took fefol and fansidar. At 24 weeks she got malaria which was treated. She did not suffer from any other illnesses during her pregnancy period,” he said.

He says that they suspect this could be a mutation of some form. He says that the mother has a skin rash which she developed at 14 years of her age and that she told medics that her skin condition didn’t bother her at all during her pregnancy.

“The scalp swellings are very soft and fluctuant. The scalp is detached and independent of the skull bone on almost 80% of the baby’s head. The baby is breathing and breastfeeding well. Both eyes are present however the left is covered by the swellings which are dark in color,” the doctor said.

He said that the provisional diagnosis is multiple scalp heamangiomas, with differentials of neurofibromatosis and sturge-weber syndrome. The baby is waiting for proper referral though the family is too poor to afford the costs of his treatment.

Dr. Twine says the baby needs surgery as soon as possible because the baby can develop an infection which can be disastrous.
