Wandegeya Security Tightened As M7 Opens Market
Security has been beefed up in the Kampala suburb of Wandegeya as President Yoweri Museveni moves to officially open Uganda’s latest modern market on Monday.
The structure is one of the seven markets countrywide that are being rebuilt under the Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Programme, a multi-million dollar project supported by the government and the African Development Bank.
The six-storied structure that is complete is designed to accommodate more than 1,000 vendors. The market has two wings and will operate 24 hours and is equipped with facilities that match standards in developed countries such as fire detection systems, cold rooms, banks, clinics, basement parking, among others.
More traders, who were recently removed from the city streets, are likely to relocate to the new market. But the vendors would be required to pay a yet unspecified fee to get space in the market.
