Victoria University Awards Top ‘Social Media Challenge Winners

Group five that comprised of senior six leavers from Nabisunsa Girls’ School emerged the overall winners of Victoria University Social Media debate competition, dubbed, “Social Media: Beneficial or Harmful”-2015

With a team of experienced judges that comprised of Miss Lea Musasizi from MTN Group, Yvonne Tumukunde from National Information Technology Authority Uganda (NITA), Maximus Byamukama, Dean Faculty of Science & Technology at Victoria University and Mr. John Bosco Byarugaba, Career Teacher at Seeta High School, group five scooped the grand prize of One million Uganda Shillings.

While announcing the results, the university secretary, Dr. Michael Kakooza said, “At Victoria University, everyone is a winner and therefore, we are going to award the second group with shs500, 000/, then the 3rd group with shs250, 000/-, respectively,” he said.

Other winners managed to get certificates, smart phones, and hampers, among others. Meanwhile, the university Vice Chancellor, Dr. Robert Stephen Isabalijja, told the participants to use social media for educative and business purposes other than abusing it.

“At VU we nurture students to do practical things. You should come and join us because we have a lot of good academic programs for you people, this is just a beginning, if you join us, you will not regret, we have more plans that will help to boost all our student so as to help them make a difference while in their communities,” Isabalijja said.

Other speakers at the function included also Dr. David Byatike Matovu, the Chairman of the University Council, among others.

Meanwhile, Charity Byarugaba, the university senior marketing specialists, told Red pepper that the event aimed at seeing whether students have positive or negative view in regard to social media especially WhatsApp and Facebook.

“We decided to get the students arguments’ in regard to questions like; Does Social Media increase social interaction and connections? Are Social networking sites disasters spoiling them as Children and nothing more than tools for Narcissists and Internet Trolls?, Are Social networking sites really destroying natural and healthy interpersonal relationships? Are they an Infiltration of security? Will Social Media break-up Families if continued to be used?  Among others areas,” Charity explained.
She added that, the competitors who are particularly S.6 Vacists, formulated groups of six with each group comprising of 10 Debaters and judges considered a lot of things including the students’ grammar, stage utilization, voice control, presentation of facts than opinions, among other factors, to determine the winners.

After receiving their awards, winners jubilated, smiled, ate, danced and ululated, drunk all sorts of drinks.

The competition which lasted for more than two weeks  attracted  student vacists from prominent schools across the country and some of them were; Entebbe SS, Kampala SS, Merryland High School, St Francis Senior Secondary School, Kyambogo College, Mpoma Royal College, Alliance High School, Equator College, Citizen Collage, Old Kampala SS, Trinity College Nabingo, Kitende, Kawempe Mbogo, Kampala SS, Naalya SS Namugongo, Mpoma Royal, Luzira SS, Everest SS, St Joseph Nsambya , Bethany, Ntare School, and  Merryland High School.
Others are; Seeta High, Kisubi Seminary, Merryland, Seroma High School, St Henrys College Kitovu, St Marys college Kisubi, Najanankumbi Young Christian School, Lubiri SS, Makindye SS, Lubiri SS, Mukono Hillside, Bishop Ciprano, Mengo Senior School, Seroma High School, Katikamu SDA, Mengo Ss, Gayaza Cambridge College, Gayaza High School, Mbogo college, Nabisunsa Girls School, St Marys college Kisubi, Ndejje SS, Uganda Martyrs Namugongo, Nagalama SS, St Mary’s Kitende, Namilyango College, Kawanda Ss, Crane High School, Makerere College, St Lawrence Creamland, Pride SS Mityana, Mityana SS, and St Lawrence Paris Palais.
