UTODA Buses Begin Operations Today
Following the signing of a 12 month contract with Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers Association (UTODA) Bus Company Awakula Ennume say they are ready to begin operations on Today.
According to a joint communiqué with KCCA, the bus chairman William Katumba says the buses will ply only one route from Gayaza via Kalerwe through Binaisa road to Kasule road, Wandegeya then to Constitutional Square before taking off to Wampewo roundabout through Jinja road.
According to the contract UTODA has signed with KCCA, operators are only permitted to run 25 buses on the streets for 12 months with each paying a monthly fee of 300,000 Uganda Shillings.
A transport ticket of 1000 shillings for short distances and 1200 shillings for a long route ticket will be issued to every passenger by the bus ticketing officials.
Awakule Ennume will be the second bus company to offer bus services to Kampala city dwellers after Pioneer Easy Bus Company had their buses impounded for defaulting on tax obligations by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).
UTODA imported over 200 buses in March but have not been in operation as they lacked a license to operate on the road.
UTODA has been in the transport sector of Uganda for over 20 years. The organization mushroomed out of a closure of the Uganda Transport Company.
UTODA has since then held contracts for the management of public transport in Kampala but lost the contract in 2012 after KCCA refused to renew the contract for the management of the two major taxi parks in Kampala.
UTODA has since then been struggling to redefine its role in the country’s transport sector.
UTODA’s woes stemmed not only from losing the KCCA contract but also the introduction of the Pioneer Easy buses. The new company challenged its monopoly in city public transport. UTODA also suffered from factional fights in the body with a section breaking away to form the Drivers and Conductors association (DACCA)
UTODA is currently re-establishing itself as the major transport service provider in the city with the arrival of 200 buses.
