Teacher Jailed for Assaulting Student

A History teacher has been remanded to Ndorwa Government Prison for allegedly assaulting a senior four student.

The Kabale Secondary School teacher Frank Matabaaro was remanded on Wednesday afternoon by the grade one magistrate’s court in Kabale.

Court presided over by His Worship Martins Kirya heard that on October 18, 2014, while at the school premises during prep time, Frank Matabaaro assaulted Faridah Kasaatura.

It is alleged Matabaaro assaulted the victim after the student refused to remove a cap from her head in the school library. Matabaaro took her refusal as disrespect and indiscipline and proceeded to beat her up.

Shortly thereafter the student became so unwell she had to be rushed to Muhunde’s Clinic in Kabale town. After initial treatment, she was later referred to Kabale Regional Referral Psychiatric Department because she was exhibiting symptoms of mental illness.

Kasaatura was forced to miss her Biology theory Uganda Certificate of Education exam.

Angry students, on learning of her illness, attempted to lynch the teacher.

The Police moved in swiftly and all the students were forced to go home after spending two days on a hunger strike.

Only the senior four students were allowed to stay at school to conclude their exams.

The students reported back to school on the 4th of November 2014.

Matabaaro pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and was subsequently remanded to Ndorwa government prison up to 26th of November 2014 when the case will come up for further mention.
