One of the 53 suspects charged for instigating the July 2014 Rwenzori attacks has died in detention.

The coordinated attacks which took place on July 5th in the districts of Ntoroko, Kasese and Bundibugyo left 90 people dead.

The deceased, identified as Amri Kisembo, a resident of Bigando village, Kitswamba sub-county has, together with his co-accused persons been on remand since July last following the attacks that left 11 people dead at Bigando village.  Kisembo has been facing trial before the General Court Martial.

Geoffrey Sibendire, the private defense lawyer for the suspects confirmed the report. He explains that although the deceased was sick, his health must have been worsened by the harsh prison conditions.

“One of the clients I represent in the court martial by the names of Kisembo Amri died yesterday at Buhinga hospital. At the time of his arrest he was sickly and prison conditions must have worsened his health”. Sibendire said.

Sibendire said that he is in touch with the deceased’s family to travel to Kabarole hospital and Katojo prison before making final arrangements for the burial.

On December 20, 2014, Ibrahim Baluku one of the 126 suspects released by Court Martial in Bundibugyo district revealed that another suspect had died in Katojo prison while on remand as a result of torture during arrest.

Baluku was then speaking during a meeting between the Bakonzo leaders in Bundibugyo district and Rwenzururu King Charles Wesley Mumbere during his visit of the district
