The Makerere University Lord Councilor, Doreen Nyanjura, Kawempe Lord Councilor Segirinya Mohammad and MP Mubarak Munyagwa, have been arrested at Makerere University as they were trying to hold a fundraiser meeting at Freedom Square.
The trio have been arrested and taken Central Police Station with some other former and current Makerere University students who were in attendance.
This botched meeting had been called by FDC’s former presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye who was blocked by police from leaving his home in Kasangati.
Besigye initiated the fundraising campaign with the intent of raising Shs28bn, the amount the academic staff is demanding from the government as incentive arrears for nine months.
According to Besigye, they intend to collect this money in whichever way possible and that they even welcome items that can be auctioned to raise funds.
“Am being blocked from delivering my contribution of Guernsey Cow and Shs3m. Meantime, let’s open online channels for pledges.” Besigye tweeted hours before.
The University remains closed on the directive of the president after the academic staff went on strike protesting nonpayment of their incentive arrears.
