Proscovia Salaamu Musumba, The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) vice chairperson for eastern Uganda says that her failure to notify her party upon joining a Ugandan delegation to Rome recently was an oversight.

Musumba says that although she does not regret the visit, she is ready to face the disciplinary committee in FDC to apologize for traveling in the company of President Yoweri Museveni without the consent of her party-FDC.

Musumba, the LCV chairperson for Kamuli District, represented leaders of local governments on the delegation which also had first Lady Janet Museveni, Ministers; Adolf Mwesigye, Justine Kasule Lumumba and Henry Okello Oryem, Theressa Mbire a senior advisor to the President, MP Margret Aleper, Monsignor Odongo, the Vicar General of Gulu Diocese, and Victor Kobero, a representative of the business community.

However, her presence as part of the delegation aroused hullabaloo from FDC members and other opposition groups who questioned her loyalty and accused her of maintaining close ties with the NRM government. John Kikonyogo, the FDC Spokesperson was quoted saying that Musumba erred in principle when she failed to notify her party of the arrangement.

Musumba now says the visit and subsequent ‘unguarded’ comments would give a bad impression to fellow leaders and other members who are obliged to emulate her deeds as a senior leader in the party, if the matter is not resolved.

“I do not regret going to meet pope because I am a staunch catholic and I do not have to consult anyone for being a catholic, what I oversaw was notifying my party secretary to know that I was out of the country and for that I am ready to face the committee” Musumba said

Musumba hastens to add that the four day visit to the Vatican was a rare opportunity for her to represent the local government association, an umbrella body for all local governments in Uganda.

“It was also an opportunity for me to learn how to make such high profile visitations such that if I became a president tomorrow, I do not have to gamble” she added.

She said this on Sunday during an interview with our reporter in the sidelines of a thanks giving ceremony for successful pilgrimage to Mecca by the former Member of Parliament for Luuka County Hajji Meddie Mulumba.

At the same service, Justice and constitutional affairs minister Kahinda Otafire challenged Salaamu Musumba to ‘regain her senses’ and return to NRM.

Otafiire said; “Why would you feel lonely and bored in opposition yet you have brilliant ideas, come back to NRM and we move the country together.”

But Musumba said that unless term limits are reinstated in the constitution of Uganda, she will oppose the government in power.

“I am one of the Catholics who fervently prayed, fasted and recited the novena when this government came into power with hope of the fundamental change. I have lived for over fifty years without witnessing a peaceful transition of power and the government I cheered has also swayed off the road,” she said.

  1. The only thing confusing me is the reason she decided to dress in NRM colours!!! Was it the big man who gave her that condition or else she’d be left behind???
