Munyagwa Charged With Inciting Violence, Remanded

Kawempe division Mayor Mubarak Munyagwa has been remanded to Ndorwa government prison by Kabale grade II Magistrate Charles Khadhis on charges of inciting violence.

Munyagwa who arrived in Kabale at 4:00pm appeared before a Grade II Magistrate’s Court presided over Charles Khadis who remanded him to Ndorwa government prison up to the July 8th when he will reappear in court.

Munyagwa faces charges of inciting violence, injuring of four police officers and damaging three police cars alongside Kampala Lord Mayor Elias Lukwago and Ingrid Turinawe.

Magistrate Charles Khadis said that he had no jurisdiction over the case and remanded Munyagwa to Ndorwa government prison up to the 8th of July 2013.

Munyagwa is accused of inciting violence while speaking at a Forum for Democratic Change rally held at Kabale Municipal main stadium on the 14th of July 2012.

The rally ended into running battles between police and locals after police stopped the supporters who had turned up from marching to Kisoro road through Kabale Garage Street.

Shortly after being remanded Munyagwa told our reporter that the he was arrested last evening by police officers who intercepted his car and whisked him off to Special investigations unit Kireka where he was allegedly tortured.

Munyagwa said that today morning he was driven to Kabale but did not know that he was supposed to appear in court up to when he arrived in Kabale.

Munyagwa was represented by Wilfred Mulumba of Murumba and Masiko company advocates and Ezra Bikangiso of Bikangiso and Company Advocates.

Wilfred Mulumba, one of Munyagwa’s defense lawyers, accused the state of playing dirty tricks. He said police should actually be in the dock for trampling over the rights of the Ugandans.

The court room was packed to capacity with many FDC leaders led by Lydia Turyahumura the Kabale FDC chairperson and Kabale Municipality mayor.

Also present in court were district security bosses led by Kigezi regional police commander Olivia Rosemary Wawile and Kabale district internal security officer Robert Nabimanya.

Police in uniform and plain clothes were also heavily deployed outside the court room and around Makanga hill.
