MUK Dons Finally Agree To Call Off Strike

By Serestino Tusingwire

Makerere University lecturers have finally resolved to call off the sit-down strike after almost two months of university closure.

The lecturers under their umbrella organization, Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) today had an emergence meeting to discuss the re-opening of the university in the main hall.

In a tight contest with some lecturers strongly opposing the move, a majority vote had to be conducted where out of 137 lectures in attendance, 81 voted to reopen the university while 56 voted against it.

On Friday last week, the meeting to agree on calling off strike flopped as some members walked out in protest of the suggestions that to return to work as they wait for incentive arrears.

By accepting to call off the strike, it means they have accepted to be paid salary for November and half of December and they wait for incentive arrears which will be paid in installments beginning February next year.

The University has closed since November 1, following a sit-down strike by academic staff over incentive arrears amounting to Shs28bn.

The university council will therefore sit and agree on when students will report back to school.
