Lukyamuzi Tasks MPs to have Makerere Re-opened Immediately

By Serestino Tusingwire

The Conservative Party president, Ken Lukyamuzi has tasked the members of the 10th Parliament to move a motion in Parliament to reverse the directive by president Museveni on Makerere University closure.

The university was closed on November 1 on the directive of president Museveni following academic staff’s strike over incentive arrears amounting to Shs28 billion that had accumulated since February this year.

Addressing journalists in Kampala today, Lukyamuzi says Parliament has not exercised their powers as stipulated in article 70(1) of the constitution where powers are given to MPs to reverse some directives ordered by the president when they violate human rights.

He explains that MPs should pass a resolution to open Makerere immediately to enable the visiting committee conduct a fair inquiry when the university is operating.

“How can the committee conduct an inquiry when lecturers, students, and other administration officials who could provide some information are home?” he says.

It’s against this back ground that he insisted that MPs, most especially from the committee of education should move a motion of reversing Museveni’s directive to enable the visiting committee conduct its research when the university is open.
