Late Susan Magara, Mowzey Radio murder trial judge appointed new DPP

Kampala – President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Justice Jane Francis Abodo as the new Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to replace Justice Mike Chibita.

Justice Abodo was transferred to at the Criminal Division of the High Court in March 2018 after Principal Judge Yorokamu Bamwine shook-up the High Court following President Museveni’s appointment of judges.

Justice Abodo replaces Mike Chibita who was appointed with two other judges to the Supreme Court in December 2019.

In a letter addressed to the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, President Yoweri Museveni appointed Justice Chibita, Ezekiel Muhanguzi and Percy Tuhaise to Supreme Court under the powers vested in him in the 1995 Constitution of Uganda.

Justice Abodo awaits the approval of the Parliamentary Appointments Committee.

President Museveni has also constituted the leadership code tribunal – as mandate by the constitution.

The Leadership Code tribunal is set to be led by Ms. Irene Karugonjo Seggawa as the Chairperson, former State Minister of Works and Bugabula South legislator Asuman Kiyingi as Deputy Chairperson, Jane Okelowange, Diddas Bakunzi Mufasha and Joyce Nalunga Birimumaaso as members.

Justice Abodo Jane Frances will join Dr. Michael Atingi-ego recently appointed as Deputy Governor Bank of Uganda for vetting by the Appointments Committee.

Also set to appear before the Committee are Dr. Johnson Byabasaija and Mr. James Mwanje for contract renewal Commissioner General of Prisons and Deputy Commissioner General respectively as sanctioned by President Museveni.

Justice Abodo’s High Profile cases

Then judge of the High-Court, Justice Aboda, on October 31, 2019, delivered the judgement in a case involving Godfrey Wamala, aka Troy, accused of killing musician Moses Ssekibogo, aka Mowzey Radio finding the accused guilty of manslaughter handing him a 14year sentence.

In December 2018, Justice Abodo was re-assigned the Late Susan Magara murder trial after High court judge Elizabeth Kabanda pulled out of the case citing conflict of interest with one of the accused persons, Hajara Nakandi she claimed to have known for the last 35 years and wouldn’t be able to provide justice.
