Kiprotich won in 2 hours 09 minutes and 1 second.

Kiprotich entered Luzhniki Stadium well ahead of two Ethiopians  Desisa who clocked  2:10:51, Tola came third with 2:10:23  to the finish line.

As the marathoners made their way up to Red Square, they had few fans along the way to cheer them on during a sweltering afternoon with temperatures hovering around 86 degrees.

Kiprotich, having allowed the Ethiopians to set the pace, finally made the decisive move just after the 40km mark, and this time the runners from the Horn of Africa had no answer, contenting themselves with the silver and bronze.

This victory makes it a second for the Ugandan runner, who become only Ugandan after John Akii-bua to win gold for the east African nation at the Olympics.

No Kenyans were in the top three for the first time at the world championships since 2005. Kenyans had won the last three world titles.

The top Kenyan on a sunny and warm afternoon in Moscow was Peter Some in ninth place.
