Kayihura Not Knifed – Police

The Uganda Police Force has rubbished reports that the country’s Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gen Kale Kayihura had been fired and appointed Uganda’s representative to the UN.

Andrew Felix Kaweesi, the new police spokesperson, revealed this in a press statement issued on Thursday in which he also asked the public to disregard the reports.

“Today, 27/08/2016, various social media platforms carried information that the Inspector General of Police, General Kale Kayihura has been appointed Uganda’s permanent representative to United Nations,” his statement said.

Social media platforms have been rife with a rumor that Kayihura had been knifed and that the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) Land Forces Chief of Staff, Brigadier Leopold Kyanda had been appointed IGP.

It added, “The reports also allege that Brig. Leopold Kyanda has been promoted to Maj. Gen and appointed the IGP. The Uganda Police Force would like to clarify that this information is not true and is aimed at creating unnecessary tension and unrest. We request the general public to disregard such reports with contempt it deserves.”

On Friday, the Deputy Chief Justice Steven Kavuma, halted the criminal prosecution of Kayihura before Makindye Chief Magistrates Court until the main petition pending before the Constitutional Court is heard and determined. In the main petition a concerned lawyer Robert Rutaro is challenging the constitutionality of Kayihura’s prosecution before Makindye court.

The police chief was due to appear in the Makindye court on Monday after he failed to answer to a previous summon to appear and answer charges of police brutality.
