High Court sitting in Kabale on Tuesday afternoon sentenced a 24 year old man to 20 years imprisonment over aggravated defilement.
Court Presided over by Justice Michael Elubu heard that on 14th of June 2011, Ivan Irankunda a resident of Gahinga village, Gisorora parish, Nyakabande Sub County in Kisoro district defiled a ten year old minor of the same residence.
Prosecution told court that Irankunda found the victim working in a garden of sweet potatoes and dragged her to the nearby eucalyptus tree plantation from where he defiled her.
The defiler is said to have later on given 500 shillings to the victim in return for her silence. The victim, however, reported to her parents the matter who alerted police.
Before delivering the Judgment, the convict was given a chance to defend herself but he opted to maintain his silence.
Justice Elubu went ahead and handed him a 20 year jail term at Ndorwa government prison. The severity of the punishment is meant to act as a deterrent to those who intend to commit crimes of the same nature.
After the decision by the Judge, the convict showed no emotion and remained composed before he was taken away to the court cells by prison warders.
