Gov’t Won’t Hesitate To Shut Down Social Media Again — Paddy Ankunda

Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) spokesperson Paddy Ankunda has stated that government will not hesitate to block social media again if citizens continue to misuse the networking platforms.

Issuing the warning while appearing on NBS today morning, he said social media users must act responsibly.

“Some of our people on social media must act responsibly. This country is bigger than the things we think we can do,” Mr Ankunda said.

Government blocked social media during the February 18th presidential elections and in May during president Museveni swearing ceremony.

Commenting on Sunday Gulu Central Police Station attack, he argued that it is too early to term attackers as a rebel outfit.

He stated that a “rebel group needs to be consistent with command and control,” which the attackers lacked.

“I don’t want to conclude that these attackers belong to a rebel group. They are acting like gangs,” Ankunda noted.

“We don’t see any links between those arrested with alleged rebel links and the defiance campaign but we are investigating.”
