Foreigners in Retail Business Must Quit Uganda within 14 days

By Serestino Tusingwire

Members of Parliament on the committee on tourism, trade and industry have issued a two-week ultimatum to all foreigners engaged in petty trade to close up their shops if they cannot manage large scale investments.

The legislators argue that the foreign investors are shortchanging the government by doing jobs that should be left for Ugandans.

They issued the ultimatum on Tuesday during a meeting with the Trade Minister, Amelia Kyambadde at parliament.

There has been a scuffle between MPs and small scale investors accusing them of coming pretending to be investors and after settling in the country, then turn to small businesses thus competing with poor Ugandans.

However, president Museveni has come out to warn the MPs to go slow on these investors mostly Chinese arguing that harassing them may result cutting the aid the Chinese government extends to numerous Uganda’s projects.
