Electricity Engineer Found Dead, 17 Workers Arrested

Seventeen people are in custody at Soroti Central police station in connection to the death of an Indian-born electrical engineer.

Ayub Waiswa, Soroti District Criminal Investigations officer, identified the deceased as Mithilesh Mahto, a 31-year-old site Engineer with KALPA TARU Power Transmission Limited, a company that is upgrading Tororo – Opuyo – Lira power line.

Mithilesh Mahto was on Wednesday found dead and hanging on a tree in a bush in Ajonyi Village, Katine Sub-county in Soroti District.

Waiswa explained that the 17 suspects, including 11 Ugandans of Asian origin, have been working together with the deceased in upgrading Tororo – Opuyo – Lira power line.

Joab Wabwire, the District Police Commander Soroti, said the suspects are being held to help with Police investigations.

One of the suspects who declined to be named told URN that the deceased told them as they were working on a power line in Ajonyi that he was going to ease himself but never came back. He added that after a long wait they were forced to follow him and found him hanging on a tree.

Wabwire identified the suspects as Mohan-Singh, Suredhe, Do-rman –Mato, Jhaman-Mato, Buvenesh, Bihari –Mato, Dipchanid –Mato, Mahendar-Mato, Bihari, Peri-Yasam, Buneswar-Mato  ii.

Others are Paul Obilan, Ebyetu, Ekoneu, Elori, Aimal and David Okiror.

The suspects were rounded up while working on the power poles between the districts of Soroti and Kaberamaido.

The body of the deceased is lying in Soroti Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary waiting for a postmortem to be conducted by the regional Police doctor based in Mbale.
