DP WOES: Elders Called In, Mao Warns Against Factions

Norbert Mao, the DP president says the problems affecting his party cannot be resolved easily unless they get to the root cause of the troubles. According to Mao, there is a solution to the problems but warns it will not be easy. Addressing the DP National council on Friday, Mao said there is need to draw a fine line between principled arguments and squabbles.
He explained that Ugandans have a lot of discontent and want a government that cares for them and an army that does not serve one regime. Mao said that the current economic system in the country does not address the problems of the masses, adding that DP can be the best alternative to the ruling government only if it gets it house in order. Speaking candidly, Mao said there are some national council members who packed their bags prepared for a fight thinking the storm within the party was going to burst.
Speaking in a room packed with among others members who he recently caused to fire and arrested, Mao said there are many people who are skeptical about their leadership. He said the same people yearn for a democratic party created in their own image and not of the party constitution and stir trouble in an attempt to destabilize his leadership. Mao called for unity amongst the party members, restoration of mutual confidence and teamwork.
Mao who was once a member of Uganda Young Democrats before he became President cited the interim leadership of UYD, new UYD leadership, Democratic Party Defence Forces and now the Democratic revival committee which he said shall all be disbanded by the National Executive Council.
He revealed that after the wrangle erupted he met the party secretary general Mathias Nsubuga, National treasurer and national chairman who asked themselves how to deal with the combative mood of party members. They resolved to use the disciplinary committee to handle the wrangles and also hold mediation meetings to find consensus. Both Kenneth Kakande the former party spokesperson and Brenda Nabukenya the woman MP for Luweero who were involved in the party wrangles in the last two weeks agreed that it is time for reconciliation and their party fate shall be decided by NEC.
Sebuliba Mutumba, the DP chief whip welcomed the reconciliation talks.
The party National council consists of 224 members including 45 of the National Executive Committee, 65 members who contested to be MP’s including losers and winners and 112 district chairpersons, Ex-officials Presidents Kawanga Ssemwogerere and Sebana Kizito.
