Designer Joe Malaika Opens Up On Fashion And Ladies

By Fab Mc

You are probably not a person of style if the name Joe Malaika does not ring a bell every time you hear it. Malaika is an award-winning fashion designer, businessman, and family man based in the US. He shared his fashion voyage with RP’s Fab Mc.

FabMc: What kind of chap is Joe Malaika?

Joe Malaika: I am ambitious and driven. I thrive on challenges and constantly set goals for myself, so I have something to strive toward. I’m never comfortable with settling, and I’m always looking for an opportunity to do better than yesterday, I love my family, religious background so the church is a must every Sunday, never once had a drink in my life and I don’t think I’ll ever drink. And a huge fan of the NBA.

FabMc: When did you first realize you wanted to pursue a career as a designer?

Joe Malaika: As far back as I can remember, I do have a fashion background. My nana was a seamstress, I did pick up a lot from her. But it took me until college to realize I had always been what people call a designer, and that I could get paid for being me.

FabMc: What was your first job out of college, and how did you land that position?

Joe Malaika: My first gig out of college, I printed a bunch of shirts for “Walk For Hunger” Walk for Hunger is an extraordinary event sustained by ordinary people. The Walk for Hunger has been a tradition in Massachusetts. Today, the Walk has become the country’s oldest continual pledge walk and the largest one-day fundraiser focused on alleviating hunger. On the first Sunday in May each year, more than 40,000 Walkers and 2,000 Volunteers join together to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors. Obviously Last year 2020 & this year it won’t happen because of the pandemic.

FabMc: What did you wear on your first date?

Joe Malaika: I haven’t been on many dates but one I vividly remember right after class in high school, went straight to a local pizza shop, we both got two slices and ice Tea, pulled out a card in my heather grey sweatpants, and it got declined so I wore sweatpants, XL T shirts, and giant sunglasses.

FabMc: What was the biggest rookie mistake you made when just starting out?

Joe Malaika: Honestly the biggest rookie mistake is being afraid to ask for help!

FabMc: Tell me about your love life?

Joe Malaika: I have only had three relationships, never been on a dating site or signed up for dating apps, but l am happy with who I am with right now.

FabMc: Tell me 3 things you can stand about ladies

Joe Malaika: Inability to take the blame sometimes it’s my fault but sometimes it’s your fault too. So take the blame lady will ya? Hehehe

Ladies who don’t text back! Seriously what is your issue? I can’t stand the ones you call and choose to text back asking if you called I know you’re on your phone lady.

Being cheap. I get it that not everyone is Oprah. You may have a budget but please don’t roll your eyes or question something’s cost throughout your entire date, carry your debit card in case my bill declines hahaha it has in the past but seriously just don’t purposely order the most expensive food on the menu!

Oh and I can’t stand body odor boss your fragrance game doesn’t have to be phenomenal but at least smell good.

FabMc: How is working in fashion different today than from when you started out?

Joe Malaika: Without a doubt, social media has changed everything! You can reach thousands using social media!

FabMc: What role do you think social media plays in fashion today?

Joe Malaika: I mean we all use social media to interact and stay connected to our clients. There’s literally no other way you just have to be creative using it.

FabMc: What was your biggest fear when going out and starting your own line?

Joe Malaika: Biggest fear was competition. It was honestly terrifying looking at all the brands with massive financial resources how all my friends could brag while wearing certain brands. One day one of my friends told him that even if I did duplicate a suit of a certain brand, he wouldn’t pay even half of the money! I asked them if this brand even knows you. Will you ever meet them? I think that hit him hard. I mean you will never have enough information to make the critical decisions you need to make but just don’t let anyone put you down.

FabMc: What made you want to expand your business from just designing clothing?

Joe Malaika: Just growth l mean every brand wants growth so l have added bags and soon I will be adding fragrances and many more.

FabMc:  what awards have you received?

Joe Malaika: I have been nominated so many times I mean The commonwealth of Massachusetts & the City of Boston have both rewarded me the certification for not just being a fashion designer Extraordinaire but my involvement in different cancer charities. Boston magazine named me 2019/2020 most stylish Bostonian.

I’m honored to be nominated in Boston Fashion awards almost every year as one of the top designers in the city I have won the award twice, several fashion awards outside the USA I’ve been nominated and won as well

FabMc: How do you want women to feel when wearing your clothes?

Joe Malaika: I want women to feel great while wearing my clothes. I want them to get as many compliments as they could and most importantly I want them to come back.

FabMc: What have you noticed about the Ugandan fashion industry so far?

Joe Malaika: The Fashion Industry in Uganda is growing every year for real

FabMc:  What’s your favorite dish?

Joe Malaika: I love good shawarma. If I traveled to a new country, I would always search for the closest Shawarma joint.

FabMc: Tell me the kind of ladies you like

Joe Malaika: You’re going to get me in trouble with the wife hahaha. But here we go for a girl who loves to work obviously. Ladies who support what I’m doing or willing to learn is a plus. A lady who has studied abroad or lived somewhere else. You always accumulate experience. Emotionally strong but willing to be vulnerable. Someone dominant over me, someone educated. I don’t question anyone’s religion but she’s got to be a prayerful boss. I honestly don’t ask for much but any time I find those, it’s always a plus my father told me that you’ll never find all the qualities you like in a girl just have her meet at least 60%.

FabMc: What crazy thing have you ever done in the name of love?

Joe Malaika: Hahaha Fab I have done lots of crazy things for love we all have. I once wanted to beat up a guy 10 times my size because he tried to dance with my ex in a night club hahaha now that was crazy! I could be deceased by now who knows hahaha
