Rugukiri – At least 4,000 elderly persons from Rukungiri district are to benefit from the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment, a government initiative that extends financial support to senior citizens.
The Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment (SAGE) was introduced as a pilot project in 2010 under the Expanding Social Protection (ESP) programme, specifically targeting labour-constrained individuals and households. Each beneficiary receives a monthly stipend of 25,000 Shillings.
The Ministry of Gender and social Development under Social Protection Policy on Wednesday launched the distribution of funds for senior citizens under social assistance grant meant to empower elders that are 80 years and above in Rukungiri District at Western Division headquarters in rukungiri municipality that was presided over by the rukut LCV boss andrewson Katebire.
Nemiscious Agaba the Rukungiri District Community Development Officer says that this money was supposed to be distributed starting from January 2020 each receiving ugx 25000 per month therefore each will today receive their arrears for six months equivalent to Ugx 150,000.
Agaba also said that all sub counties will be catered for starting with Rukungiri Municipality emphasizinh that only those who are 80 years and above and have registered with NIIRA will receive this money through their Centenary Bank accounts.
He said that due to Coronavirus pandemic, the District shall find the elders in their Sub Counties and recipients must come with a mask.
Andrewson Katebire the Rukungiri District LC 5 Chairman thanked the elders for the great work they have done for the government and urged them to continue supporting the government.
He requested those who have not yet registered with NIIRA and are 80 years to do so and also be considered to receive their money.
