Sudan’s El Merriekh Football club is in Uganda ahead of their CAF Champions League second leg clash with Vipers FC on Wednesday.
The team jetted in on Saturday afternoon and is staying at the plush Pearl of Africa Hotel, located on Lugard Road Plot 10 Nakasero Hill Kampala, Uganda.
Our sources in the El Merriekh’s camp inform us that 33 strongman contingent will be supported by fans from South Sudan, especially Juba who are expected to come in their droves.
Wednesday’s match will be played at St Marys Stadium Kitende. Vipers faces an uphill task trying to overturn a 2 – 1 defeat it suffered at the hands of the Sudanese team last Thursday.
Only a win will guarantee the Ugandan side safe passage to the next round. Striker Daniel Sserunkuma scored Vipers’ lone away goal in the last minute of the 90 to give hope of progression to the next round to the Ugandan side.
To show the importance of Wednesday’s game, El Merriekh is accompanied by the club’s Vice President, Muhammad Musa El Kundo. He met with Pearl of Africa Hotel boss, Chairman Mohammed Hamid who also doubles as Aya Investments boss, after the arrival of the team.
The Sudanese outfit is without inform striker, Bakri El Madina who will miss the 5th December tie through injury, while Niger’s Majid Soumana will not feature.
It is not clear why he won’t be playing. When asked why the team had come four days before the game, a club official told us that it is El Merriekh practices to appear in the host country of an upcoming game three days before the clash to help them familiarize.
He added that the team has another game to play with Algerian side in the Arab Cup so it was better for them to come early and have enough time for training.
The official told us they respect Vipers because they know the quality of Ugandan football. Wednesday’s game will be handled by a set of referees from Rwanda.
The center referee for the return leg is Abdoul Karim Twagiramukiza. Dieudonne Mutuyimana and Honore Simba are the first and second assistant referees respectively. Zanzibar’s Ali Mzee Zam will be the match commissioner.
