Airtel Moves to Terminate Interconnection Agreement with UTL

Airtel Uganda has decided to terminate the interconnection agreement with the defunct Uganda Telecommunications (UTL).
According to the latest press release by Airtel Uganda, airtel customers will no longer be able to make or receive calls from UTL effective Friday February 03, 2017.
“Airtel regrets to inform its customers that effective Friday 3rd February, 2017, our subscribers will not be allowed to make calls or receive calls from UTL,” presser reads in part.
“This is because, the interconnection agreement and interconnection services between airtel Uganda and UTL.”
This comes on the heels of the current financial difficulties UTL is facing which might not be fixed in time.
Uganda Telecom is one of the oldest telecom companies in the country and the third in terms of subscriber base now standing at less than two million out of the 22.97million mobile phone users.
It is alleged that the company collapsed due serious management problems and corruption scandals characterized by absence of audited books of accounts, illegal sale of company assets and useless [frequent] travels to outside countries among others.
