Makerere Dons To Decide On Way Forward Today
By Serestino Tusingwire
Makerere University lecturers under the umbrella body, Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) are today expected to discuss the resolutions that were reached by their leaders on Tuesday.
The general assembly is also expected to come up with the date for reopening the university when they agree with what was discussed in Tuesday meeting with the university council.
It should be remembered that on Tuesday council held a consultative meeting with MUASA executive and resolved to pay November salary, half of December and one month incentive. The remaining salary arrears would be paid mid next year.
It is alleged that president Museveni told the lecturers to call off the strike and return to work without giving him any conditions.
If the general assembly agrees to the above terms and conditions, they will propose the date the university shall be reopened for students to complete their first semester.
The first semester which started late August was cut short on November 1 when the president decided to close the university following a sit-down strike by academic staff over incentive arrears for nine months amounting to Shs28bn.
