LC Elections: Voters To Line Up Behind Candidates

By Serestino Tusingwire

The minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire has said that the January 2017 elections for local council one and two will be conducted by voters lining up behind their favorite candidates.

The minister informed Parliament yesterday that government has approved only 9 billion for the election instead of 37 billion that was initially budgeted to conduct the elections.

“We agreed with that because we a poor, we cannot behave like those countries which have surplus money in their budget.”

Some members of parliament apparently supported the move saying that lining up is an extremely democratic and transparent method of election. Others reasoned out that it eliminates those people who ask money from rival candidates yet they have to choose one of them.

Uganda last held elections for local council leaders in 2001. The method of lining up behind candidates was last seen during the national resistance council elections in 1987 and 1989.

However, some members of the public are skeptical on the transparency of voting by lining up behind candidates.
