Baryamureeba Bashes MPs over ‘Open Makerere’ Fundraiser Campaign

Former Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba has Bashed MPs over ‘Open Makerere’ Fundraiser Campaign aimed at raising Shs28bn to clear academic staff’s arrears.
The MPs led by the Ntungamo Municipality MP Gerald Karuhanga, reason that this could be the only way to have the institution re-opened since the government instead of clearing the debt, chose to close the university.
However, Prof. Baryamureeba questioned the thinking of these MPs saying they are short sighted because the problem of Makerere is not money and something big needs to be done.
“MPs join campaign to fundraise for Makerere University, really? MPs please focus on amending the main law governing universities in Uganda.” He posted on his twitter timeline.
The legislators from all political parties were able to raise Shs550,000 on the first day and are targeting Shs50,000 from 60,000 people to be able to raise that money.
Makerere University was closed at the start of November following academic staff strike claiming for salary incentive arrears amounting to Shs28bn for nine months.
