Members of Parliament during Wednesday’s plenary session added their voice on those who are advocating for the re-opening of Makerere University which has been closed since the start of this month.
The MPs put the leader of government business on task to explain why the country’s top university has been closed for over three weeks and the up to now no one is aware of the date it will be re-opened.
Aol Ocan Betty, the Gulu woman MP said; “Closing Makerere is not only frustrating parents and students, but it’s also frustrating Uganda as a country.”
In response, the prime minister said; “we will open Makerere when the government is contented.”
Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah implored the MPs to shelve their demands to have Makerere university opened until government comes up with a position on a possible timeline for the re-opening.
Meanwhile, a 9-man visitation committee led by Abel Rwendeire which is to probe the university said it will need not less than three months to come up with a well detailed report about the matters facing Makerere.
