UNRA Halts Payment of Shs200bn To Chinese Road Construction Company
Uganda National Roads Authority recently stopped the payment of Shs200 billion to a Chinese construction firm that was allegedly planning to defraud the government of money.
The company, China Railway 3 International, is reported to have registered a company under the name “China Railway Number 3 Uganda” to compensate people affected by a road project.
But a whistle blower notified officials at UNRA who immediately stopped the payment.
“When they opened that company, the Kanoni-Ssembabule Job was awarded to China Railway Number 3 International and the company that did the job was China Railway Number 3 Uganda, meaning this was a different entity that executed the job and the money was paid to the different entity,” explained Betty Among the vice chairperson of Parliamentary Committee on Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE)
Upon knowing the fraud, Uganda National Roads Authority recently stopped the payment of Shs200 billion to China Railway Number 3 Uganda to construct Hoima – Katungulu and Moroto roads.
“Because of this kind of fraud surrounding the company, UNRA has put a halt on the money but there is a lot of un-sincerity in this transaction,” added Among.
