Kazinda Drags Janet M7 into OPM Scandal
By Serestino Tusingwire
The convicted former principal accountant in the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) has asked for accountability reports of former Karamoja Affairs minister Janet Museveni to use in his defence against alleged embezzlement of Shs5.4 billion.
Geoffrey Kazinda wants OPM to avail him with the activity and accountability reports which Janet Museveni submitted whenever she visited Karamoja while still sector minister, because the constitution gives him that mandate to ask for necessary information in his defence.
“It is in that regard that we write to be furnished with certified copies of activity reports and accountabilities for the visit to Karamoja by minister for Karamoja Affairs during February 2012 under the building peace and sustainable development in Karamoja programmee…,” Kazinda’s August 25 letter to the OPM reads in parts.
Kazinda states that the report in question contains details of the purpose of the workshop, the venue, attendees, budget and accountabilities, which he wants to peruse and use as part of his defence in the Anti-Corruption Court.
He says that the money he is accused of embezzling was spent on the First Lady’s advance technical team, mobilization facilitation and incidental expenses.
Kazinda is facing 69 corruption charges. He is accused of stealing more than Shs5.4b meant for post-war reconstruction in Northern Uganda and Karamoja sub-regions under the Peace, Recovery and Development Programme.
