Government of Uganda is to spend over Shs600million on Golden Jubilee medals for MPs thanking them for their great contribution to the country.

According to the list released by Parliament this week, a total of 1,200 former Members of Parliament who served from 9th October 1962 to 9th October 2012, will be given Golden jubilee medals.

Parliament’s assistant director of communication and public affairs, Hellen Kaweesa, said that the institution has set aside over Shs600million to facilitate the awards ceremony due to take place on 26th September.

Kaweesa also explained that the idea to honour the former legislators was fronted by President Yoweri Museveni.

The awards are already eliciting voices of disapproval from some Ugandans especially among those who think the Shs600million to be spent on the award ceremony can be spent on priority areas like healthcare.
