Separate Museveni views from National Views — Former Ambassador

Former Uganda Ambassador to the United States of America (USA) Edith Sempala has said that president Museveni views are not shared by majority of Ugandans.

This comes at the heels of Museveni’s remarks at last week’s swearing ceremony where he described ICC as a bunch of “useless fools.”

This prompted US, European and Canadian diplomats to leave the function at Kololo Independence Grounds.

The US state department said they had also objected to the presence of Sudan’s Omar al-Bashir at the ceremony. Mr Bashir is wanted by the ICC on charges of genocide.

Appearing on NBS TV today morning, Sempala stated that it is not right to take Museveni’s  view as a national view.

“We need to separate President Museveni’s views from national views. His views on ICC are not the views of us all,” she said.

Adding; “It is not right to cluster Ugandans as parties in agreement with Museveni’s views on ICC.”

She argued that the walk-out by foreign diplomats was a “measured response.”

Appearing on the same show, foreign affairs ministry permanent secretary James Mugume said president Museveni was only re-echoing the stand of the African Union (AU) on the ICC.

He revealed that Western envoys were told prior that Sudan’s Bashir was attending the ceremony and they agreed to sit at the back.
