Nsereko Rejects Museveni’s Plea on Deputy Speakership

Kampala Central Member of Parliament Muhammad Nsereko has rejected calls from president Museveni asking him to denounce his deputy speakership bid and support National Resistance Movement (NRM) status quo.

NRM has fronted current speaker Rebecca Kadaga and deputy speaker Jacob Oulanyah for the two positions.

In a meeting held at state house yesterday, Muhammad Nsereko said he also persuaded president Museveni to ditch Oulanyah and support his bid.

“We have heard a cordial meeting with His Excellence President Museveni and other independent Members of Parliament. He particularly wanted to address us on the issue of speaker and persuade us to support Rt. Hon Jacob Oulanyah,” Nsereko revealed via his official Facebook page.

Adding; “With support of many of the members, I have respectfully disagreed with him on stepping down for Oulanyah. We shall settle the matter in a free and fair vote on the 19th in parliament. Our values are different and I will stand by the will of our voters to protect our constitution. My question still is, why ask me to stand down if Oulanyah is strong like they say? I have advised him to support me instead of Hon Oulanyah.”

Museveni has so far persuaded National Resistance Movement (NRM) legislators including Monica Amoding, Agaaba Abbas, Jovah Kamateka, Dennis Hamson Obua, Lwemiyaga county MP Theodore Ssekikubo and independent leaning Budama South MP Jacob Oboth Oboth who had expressed interest in the deputy speakership to quit.

Nsereko is among the NRM rebel MPs who were kicked out of the party after failure to follow party lines in 2013.

In 2011, he won Kampala Central parliamentary race on the NRM ticket but contested as independent candidate in the recent elections.
