Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) has launched a two months military operation in the Rwenzori region to smash out criminals responsible for the on-going tribal clashes in the region.
Code named “Usalama Rwenzori (Peace in Rwenzori),” and launched yesterday, the operation will cover three districts of Kasese, Ntoroko and Bundibugyo – the black spots of tribal clashes between Bamba and Bakonjo.
Brigadier Peter Elwelu, the UPDF 2nd Division Commander who is overseeing the operation said it is meant stop killing, destruction of property and intimidation of civilians by the criminals and bring to book those behind the attack.
“We shall do cordon and search operations in number of these villages to try to identify these criminals because they are known. We have their names,” Peter Elwelu said.
He promised that army will occupy the routes that criminals use when coming to attack civilians.
President Yoweri Museveni is expected to meet the Bamba and Bankojo cultural leaders in a bid to find a lasting solution to the conflict that started after the local council elections in the area.
