Rioting Makerere Students Force University Council into An Emergency Meeting

Makerere University council, the university’s highest decision making body will convene on Thursday to discuss whether to scrap or retain 60% tuition policy.

In a statement issued by the Vice chancellor Prof. John Ddumba Ssentamu after a meeting with students’ leaders, the university council will meet on Thursday.

The vice chancellor also ordered suspension of the on-going tests.

This comes at the backdrop of yesterday’s strike against the same policy.

“After deliberations with the above mentioned (students leaders), management agreed as follows; that all tests and coursework are to be postponed until the decision of the Emergency University Council Meeting that’s to be held soon; much as students representatives wanted the emergency university council meeting to be held on Wednesday 6th April at 10:00am, upon consultation by management with the chairperson university council, management fixed the emergency meeting for Thursday 7th April 2017,” the statement reads.

Management asked students to remain calm until a final resolution is passed on Thursday.

However, there are signs around campus that students may continue with the strike today.
