22bn Wandegeya Market In Total Darkness
Uganda’s power distributor UMEME has disconnected Kampala Capital City Authority’s (KCCA) owned Wandegeya Market over Shs 150million debt.
Henry Rugamba, the head of communications at UMEME said the power disconnection at the Shs 22billion market early this week followed a failure by the market to pay a debt amounting to Shs150million.
Wandegeya market was constructed under Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement (MATIP) at a tune of Shs. 22billion and it is owned by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).
However, according to inside sources at KCCA, preparations of clearing power bills for the previous months are underway with the paper work already processed.
According to vendors of soft drinks in the market, they have since then closed shop since they cannot sell warm drinks to anyone, thus frustrating their household incomes.
Shockingly, various vendors in the market suffered heavy losses during the Easter season since most businesses run smoothly with power supply.
