Steven Oundo Wanyama, the NRM candidate has been declared the new LC 5 chairman of Busia district.
Sam Agaba, the Electoral Commission Returning Officer of Busia, declared Oundo the winner at 11:15pm.
According to Agaba, Oundo garnered 31, 443 votes representing 59 percent beating the IPC candidate Deogratius Njoki who garnered 21, 844 representing 41 percent.
He said there was very poor turn up of voters. Only a total of 54, 625 of 142,025 registered voters in Busia participated in the election.
The Busia LC V chairperson’s seat fell vacant in October after the former chairman Ouma Adea was kicked out of office by the Anti-Corruption Court for soliciting bribes and abuse of office.
It all started November 8th 2011 about six months after Ouma was sworn into office when he was charged with soliciting and receiving money and abuse of office.
Court found that Adea on various dates in November 2011 corruptly solicited for gratification of 2,000 dollars from Paul Sherwen, the Managing Director of Busitema Mining Company.
The money was an inducement to allow the company survey land at Tiira trading centre in Busitema Sub County in Busia district for purposes of mining gold.
He received the money at Golf Course Hotel on Yusuf Lule road in Kampala. It was against this background that court kicked Ouma out of office.
