Thieves Break Into Kasese Diocese Cathedral

Thieves on Sunday night broke into the Kasese Catholic Diocese cathedral church in Kasese town and took away property worth millions of Ugandan shillings.

The Kasese Parish Curate Rev. Fr. Richard Sausi says that the thugs took away two sound mixers, an offertory box, choir uniform and a screen projector stand. The items were kept in the inside stores.

Fr. Sausi says the break in was discovered by the church altar boys as they prepared for the early morning mass.

Police were immediately called to the scene before prayers for the day could begin.

Fr. Sausi declined to reveal whether the offertory box had any money.

Hundreds of Christians throng Kasese Catholic cathedral every Sunday to attend the three different masses.

Police cordoned off the church premises and embarked on a search with the help of a sniffer dog. The search was not successful.

The police officer leading the operation but speaking on condition of anonymity because he is not supposed to speak on behalf of the force, told reporters that they will do whatever they  can to apprehend the suspects.

The officer said the dog had difficulty following the scent because the road from the church had a lot of human traffic. It is believed the thieves escaped through the mountains through Nyakabingo village.

Bob Kagarura the Kasese District Police Commander confirms the incident.

It is alleged that the thugs used master keys to gain access after breaking through the rear windows.

Fr. Sausi, who said that it was not the first time for the same cathedral to be broken into, condemned the practice and quickly called on the general public to desist from such sinful acts.

Pascal Thembo one of the Christians who had turned up for the morning mass regretted the incident which he said did not only puzzle them but also disrupted morning mass.

Chance Kahindo Sibyabugha, the Chairperson LC 3 of Kisinga sub-county in Kasese district has also revealed that a similar incident happened at an Anglican church near Kagando hospital on December 23, 2014. Thugs made off with the sound mixer and a piano.

Three months ago, the Kasese district chairperson LC5, Lt. Col. Mawa Muhindo led his famous “Operation Fagiya Uchafu” to recover a music system stolen from Kitabona Catholic church in Kyalhumba sub-county. The music system was recovered in a bar at Hamukungu landing site deep inside the Queen Elizabeth National Park.
