A man in Kalisizo town council in Rakai district took his own life on Boxing Day after losing UGX 700,000 in betting.
The deceased is 30-year-old Patrick Nyanzi, a resident of Kito Village, Kalisizo Town council in Rakai.
According to residents, Nyanzi decided to play cards with Paul Ntege and they put up a bet of UGX 700,000 each for whoever wins the game.
Unfortunately, Nyanzi lost the game and lost UGX 700,000 to Ntege. He left heartbroken and was found dead in a maize garden a few hours later.
Kizito Mutebi, the LC I chairperson Kito village says that, Nyanzi’s body was found by residents at Kanale.
He says residents also recovered an empty of weed master, a chemical used to control weed in the garden, which the deceased is believed to have drunk to end his life.
According to Mutebi, several youths on the village spend most of their time playing cards instead of engaging in productive work.
He says that many people in the area have lost their valuables such as houses, land and hard cash to gambling.
Mutebi has asked government to put up strong laws to stop youths from engaging in it at the expense of productive work.
Noah Sserunjoji, the Southern Regional Police commander blames the incident on idleness saying they are planning to conduct an operation in Kalisizo town to net those involved.
