Four miners in Rwanda who were buried in a limestone quarry have been found dead.
They are Valentin Muhire, Mukamukunzi Jeanne, Alex Sebahutu and Liliane Nzayituriki. The deceased were buried alive on Friday while extracting limestone in Rukumba Cell in Rutare Sector in Gicumbi district.
Their bodies were retrieved from the quarry on Saturday evening. Limestone is used by residents in this area to paint their houses. According to police sources, the deceased sneaked into the quarry without authorization from the local authorities and didn’t have any protective gear.
Christopher Semuhungu, the Northern Rwanda police spokesperson says the miners operate illegally under a very risky environment. He warned residents against the illegal practice especially during this wet season, given the fact that the area is prune to landslides.
Semuhungu attributes the accident to heavy rains that have softened the ground, making underground quarries susceptible to collapse. He says police is also stepping up its sensitization efforts to check on the loss of lives.
