The Brit went into this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with a 17-point lead over Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg.
He only had to finish in the top two to ensure the title but went one better in Dubai to cap off a stunning season and win his second crown.
Rosberg started the race in pole after Hamilton struggled in qualifying yesterday but the 2008 champion got off to a flying start on Sunday.
He swooped into the lead before the first corner in a dream beginning as his childhood pal got bogged down on the line.
The German faced problems with his engine as the race went on, slipping as low as 14th while Hamilton took control.
With the world title in sight, the 29-year-old was challenged by Felipe Massa as the Williams man delivered the fastest lap of the race to close the gap to five seconds.
But Hamilton held firm and produced the perfect ending to a dream campaign for he and his team.
