Cabinet has approved the establishment of a specialized cancer Hospital, Rosemary Namayanja, the Information Minister has revealed.
According to the minister, the UGX 342 Billion hospital, which will be located at Lubowa along Entebbe road.
She says the hospital will also handle other non-communicable diseases. Namayanja says once completed, the facility is expected to reduce the morbidity and mortality arising from cancer and other non-communicable diseases through appropriate interventions, primarily targeting the population of Uganda.
She says the facility will also be open to deal with referred cases from neighboring states. Namayanja argues that the establishment of such a facility will save the country foreign exchange on the treatment of Ugandans abroad.
Early this year, the health ministry Permanent Secretary Dr Asuman Lukwago revealed that Uganda spends Ugx204bn annually on treatment abroad with Ugx7.9bn spent on civil servants. Namayanja said the new facility will bring services closer to ordinary Ugandan who don’t have chance to go abroad for treatment.
The envisaged ultra-modern facility, Namayanja said, will widen and improve knowledge of the health workers in Uganda and the region through the exposure to modern methods of diagnosis and treatment.
She said the facility will complement the efforts of the cancer and heart Institute, Mulago, with regard to handling heart, cancer and other delicate cases of non-communicable diseases.
