SC Villa and Express will be breathing heavily behind Vipers’ scalp, just like URA, Police and Bright Stars will behind the former duo when eight games in the Uganda Premier League (UPL) get underway across the country on Tuesday.
These are the most games to be lined up in a single day this season and could see big climbs and falls in the log with Vipers favourites to keep the distance at the summit.
The 2010 champions – also the only unbeaten side left in the 16-team league – welcome newcomers Sadolin Paints to Buikwe looking to win their sixth in seven games.
They lead the standings with 16 points, three ahead of second-placed SC Villa, Express and four adrift of Police, URA and Bright Stars.
Vipers coach Edward Golola will look to Mike Mutyaba, three games to his name from the midfield, and in-form Saddam Juma to break down a Sadolin side, who have won just once in seven games.
Villa will hope to bounce back from the 1-0 defeat to KCC last Friday by beating relegation favouriotes Rwenshama in Mityana if they are to keep in touch with the leaders.
Coach Sam Ssimbwa will hope Steven Bengo and Karim Ndugwa replicate the form they showed in the first three games of the season.
Wasswa Bbosa’s third-placed Express will look to build on their 2-1 away victory over Simba to ensure Villa and pace-setters Vipers keep within focus.
The Red Eagles, level on 13 points with Villa, welcome Entebbe to Wankulukuku and will bank on the experience of Willy Kavuma to get past a side threatened with relegation this early.
Coach Matthias Lule’s Entebbe are third from bottom with just four points from seven games.
The other side keeping a low profile but dangerously lurking is Angelo Lonyesi’s Police. The Cops – fifth and four points behind leaders Vipers – lost their first game in seven to SCVU last Tuesday but could bounce back when they host Simba at Namboole.
Bright Stars, also on 12 points and a place below Police, will hope to continue their decent start to the season by starving off Paul Nkata’s Kira Young, who themselves need urgent points to run away from the relegation boundaries.
At Lugogo, George Nsimbe’s KCC will be seeking to maintain momentum following their victory away to Villa.
The defending champions welcome an SCVU side, also high on confidence having picked only their second win in seven games following their 1-0 victory over Police.
KCC are seventh with 11 points while coach Morley Byekwaso’s SCVU – two places below with nine points, both having played seven games apiece.
In Lugazi, man of the moment and league leading scorer with six goals Robert Ssentongo will be out to continue his hot streak in front of goal when URA welcome bottom side Soana.
