Woman Throws Child in Pit Latrine Over UGX 400

Jennifer Obong (35), a woman in Kole district who last week tortured and later threw into a pit latrine a seven year old child has been arrested by the police.
 
Obong, a resident of Awiro village, Alito Sub County is being held at Ayara police post pending transfer to Kole Central Police Station.

She has been charged with child abuse and attempted murder.

Oliver Amuge was retrieved from a pit latrine in use on September 30th, 2014 after spending more than 16 hours in the pit. Her eye, nose and genitals had already been infiltrated by maggots.

Richard Otim, Awiro village Local Council chairperson who referred the matter to Ayara Outpost in for further management emphasised that Obong should be prosecuted and jailed.

Otim says the child was accused of buying cooking oil worth 1,000/= yet she had been authorised to spend only 400 shillings.

Constantine Okwir, the officer in charge Ayara police post confirmed they are holding Jenifer Obong until she is transferred to Kole Central Police Station pending her appearance in court.

Her torture victim Amuge remains in critical condition at Ogur Health Centre IV undergoing medical treatment.

Amuge had been helping Obong look after her child before this incident. Obong then beat Amuge until she lost consciousness. She then dumped Amuge in the pit latrine. Amuge was only rescued by neighbours after a tip off that a child had been heard crying for help inside the pit latrine.
