Police have blocked a procession organized to mark 52 years of Independence in Luweero town over political and security fears.
The organiser of the procession Ronald Ndawula, the Former Luweero LC 5 Chairman, planned to hold the crown the celebrations at Kasana Playground in Luweero town.
The district celebrations are taking place at Busula Playground in Katikamu sub county in Luweero.
This morning Luweero Deputy Resident District Commissioner Persis Namuganza and Regional Police Commander Musa Nabende jointly ordered Ndawula to cancel the function.
The Savannah Regional Police Commander Musa Nabende says that Ndawula didn’t notify police in time about the procession. Nabende added that there was no need for another function yet the district had organize a public function at another venue.
Persis Namuganza accused Ndawula of organising his event on the same day to reduce attendance at the district function.
A source said that Ndawula is also planning to use the function to declare intentions to contest for the LC 5 seat which he lost in 2011 to Abdul Nadduli.
Ndawula has cancelled the processions in town after police denied him traffic officers on the road but has not called off the function itself.
By time of filling the report, hundreds of residents were flocking Kasana Playground to attend the function and Everest Primary and Secondary school scouts have taken over security.
Ronald Ndawula explains that celebrating independence was human right for every Uganda and its not mandatory for everyone to go to Kololo Air strip or the proposed district venue.
He added that the blocking the function will tantamount to defeating the idea of independence where people are supposed to assemble and enjoy other basic rights.
The decision to block the procession has not gone down well with some local political leaders. Paul Mukungu the Central Parish Councillor at Luweero town insisted that the police order was null and void which they wont adhere to it.
Luweero Woman MP Brenda Nabukenya has also organized Independence Day Celebrations at Valley Pub, Wobulenzi tow.
At Busula playground, the participation of people on district function is largely dominated by civil servants, police and army officers and students after residents shunned it.
