Police in Kitgum district on Thursday morning recovered the body of a seven year old boy in a septic pit, a day after he went missing in Ayul B sub ward, Kitgum Town Council.
Richard Oyet, the father of Ivan Gum-Pe-Rom, the deceased boy, says his son went missing at about noon on Wednesday. He says they returned home to pray for his safe return in the evening after searching the neighborhoods in vain.
Another fresh search that ensued early on Thursday morning found the boy floating in the unprotected septic tank dead.
Jackson Baryampika, the Officer in Charge Kitgum Central Police Station, says detectives retrieved the body for postmortem without making any arrests.
Police has not yet ruled out foul play. Baryampika says the case is the second that Police responded to today. The other he says is of a foetus suspected to have been aborted and dumped in River Pager. No arrest has been made regarding the suspected abortion.
Margaret Adongkare, the Police officer in charge of Kitgum Child and Family Protection Unit, says child-related offenses are on the increase in the district. She says in the month of September, police recorded up to six cases of child desertion in Kitgum Town Council alone.
The figure is an increase from three in August, Adongkare explained. Baryampika says Police has responded by launching community policing to sensitize the public to protect children.
