The 20 finalist who will contest for the 2014 Miss Uganda crown have already been presented to the public.
The reigning Miss Uganda is Stella Nantumbwe who is away in South Africa representing the country in a reality show, the Big Brother Hotshots.
This year’s contest which is running under the theme “promoting agricultural entrepreneurship among the youth” will have its grand final on the 25th of October at Speke Resort and country club Munyonyo.
This year’s pageant is, indeed, a different ball game.
In the previous years, contestants would spend weeks in boot camp learning the catwalk, etiquette and getting all beautiful for the grand finale and a life of showbiz for the eventual winner. In this year’s boot camp, the have been groomed into beauty queens as usual but with a twist; they have ended up on a farm milking cows, feeding pigs, and growing vegetables as beauties with a purpose.
Brenda Nanyonjo, the CEO Miss Uganda, says this is a welcome change from the past beauty contests known for only the glamour and glitz. The contestants, who represent the west, north and central regions of Uganda, spent a week at Bukalasa Agricultural College in Luweero district, being equipped with basic skills in post-harvest handling, mushroom growing, juice processing, pig rearing and milking. This year’s pageant’s key sponsor is Operation Wealth Creation under Gen Caleb Akandwanaho aka Salim Saleh.
