Ugandan Teachers To Acquire Badminton Skills

The secretary general of badminton confederation Africa Raj Gaya has unveiled the body’s plans to equip Uganda’s physical education teachers with basic badminton skills in a one week course due this month 15-21 at MTN Arena.

The course sponsored by the international body is expected to attract hundreds of teachers from Kampala and a few selected schools up country. “The course will teach teachers with the basics of the game and award them certificates in a bid to develop the sport from the grass roots”, said Gaya as he presided over the award ceremony of the Tamizh Sangam Africa U15 tournament on Sunday.

He disclosed that the continental body started a schools championship which requires Uganda to organize a schools championship and get two male and female school teams to represent the country in this continental event due December 16-20 in Mauritius.

The secretary also came on board with 100 rackets, nets and shuttles donated by the continental body to be distributed to schools. After bagging team events, South Africa also dominated the individual category carrying women doubles, singles and mixed doubles to come out over all winners.

Zambia was the men singles elites, Mauritius took the men doubles while hosts Uganda only managed a bronze in the women doubles. The chairman Tamizh Sangam association Uganda Vaheed Mohamed said the tournament that was sponsored by Hema water, Mahindra, Crested Cargo and Sun enterprises will go international next year.

Individual events finals results; Men singles; Zambia’s Mulenga Kalombo bt Bernard Bongout of Mauritius 2-0 (21-17, 21-9). Ladies singles; Scholtz Johanita of South Africa bt Ketura Martin of Mauritius 2-0 (21-4, 21-6). In mixed doubles; Scholtz Johanita and Reginald Mabusela of South Africa bt Khabir Teeluck and Anjum Nihmat of Mauritius 2-0 (30-29, 24-22). South Africa’s Scholtz Johanita and Van der Mewrwe Zani bt Mauritius’s Anjuni Nihamat and Sephora Lucie in women doubles 2-0 (21-9, 21-6) while Mulenga Kalombo and Anferw Mumba of Zambia bt South Africa’s Khabir Teeluck and Alexandre Bougout 2-0 (21-10, 21-18).
