Goalkeeper Salim Omar Magoola’s El merriekh FC side are the 2014 Cecafa Kagame Club Champions after stopping APR FC 1-0 on Sunday.
Kenyan International Allan Wanga netted the lone goal after 25 minutes after a beautiful cross by Mohamed Traore in a match played at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda.
The Sudan side who ejected Uganda champions KCCA FC in the semi-finals, 3-0 on penalties have won this regional trophy twice before in 1986 and 1994.
In a game wached by the Rwanda President Paul Kagame who also contributes US$60,000 towards the prize money for the tournament every year, the visitors dominated play for longer spells with Traore proving a problem for the APR FC defenders.
After the interval, APR FC tried to reorganize themslevs bringing on Isaie Songa for Andrew Buteera, but to no avail as the El merriekh defenders and their Ugandan goalkeeper Magoola stood firm.
The former KCCA FC goalkeeper who was voted man of the match said that he was happy to help his new side win the regional trophy.
In an earlier play-off game played, home side Police FC beat KCCA FC 4-2 on penalties after the game had ended 1-1. Jimmy Mbaraga gave Police FC the lead on 34 minutes before Brian Umony equalized for KCCA FC in the early minutes of the second half.
It was Umony’s fifth goal of the tournament to make his top scorer of the competition.
During penalties, Umony and Tom Masiko missed netted for KCCA FC, while Habib Kavuma and Richard Kasagga miised their chances.
Police FC converted all their four through Jacques Tuyisenge, Fred Ndaka, Jean Uwimana and Eric Ngendahimana.
The champions El merriekh won a cash prize of UGX75 million, while APR FC picked UGX50 million and the third placed Police FC UGX25 million.
