Transport has been paralyzed at the Kampala-Mityana highway after a small cargo plane carrying United States army soldiers made an emergency landing in middle of the road.
The incident occurred at 10: 00am at Kiwawu in Malangala Sub County in Mityana. The plane is believed to have been carrying 8 US soldiers.
The Central West Police Spokesperson Phillip Mukasa told a URN Reporter that the twin rotor plane SA 2112 was carrying the soldiers from Entebbe to a mission in South Sudan but it run out of fuel. The pilot was then forced to make an emergency landing in the middle of the road.
Mukasa says that no soldiers on board were hurt and the plane did not suffer serious damage. Mukasa was, however, reluctant to divulge the identity of the passengers.
With traffic on the highway diverted, Mukasa says they have contacted Entebbe Airport authorities for fuel to enable the plane resume the journey.
However, reporters on the ground were able to speak to some of the soldiers who identified themselves by single names like Colonel Duke, Joseph, Edmond, Jaques among others.
Although the soldiers declined to speak in detail to the press, they were able to confirm that the plane was forced to land on the highway because it had run out of fuel.
The US embassy in Kampala is yet to issue a statement on the matter.
An eyewitness Samuel Mubiru tells URN that most schools, homes and shops have been deserted as residents run to catch a glimpse of the plane and its occupants.
By time of filling the story, three fire brigade trucks had been sent to the scene from Mityana Police Station to avert any fire outbreak. Scores of cars are stranded on the road as police tightly guards the scene.
