Hundreds of residents converged at Masaka Central Police Station on Wednesday evening for a glimpse of Ponsiano Lwakataka, a prominent rally driver who is now wanted for murder.

Lwakataka was picked up by officers from the Flying Squad led by Taban Kiriga, the Officer in charge of criminal investigations Rakai district, shortly after he was granted bail by Kasese magistrate’s court, where he is facing charges related to illegal fishing practices.

He was transferred to Masaka central police station in a tinted Toyota Premio vehicle registration number UAT 398W amidst tight security. On arrival at Masaka central police station, Lwakataka was reluctant to get out of the vehicle for fear of press photographers and residents had gathered to see him. Taban Kiriga, the Officer in charge of criminal investigations Rakai district explained to local media that Lwakataka is wanted in connection with the brutal murder of nine family members in Kyebe Sub County in Rakai district last year.

The murder victims are Pastor Steven Mugambe, his wife Noeline Nalinya Bena, Christine Nasimbwa, Jane Nakiwala, Dan Ssemwanaga, and Christine Nakiwala, Andrew Mpeirwe, and Maria Nakajugo. Pastor Mugambe and his family members were hacked to death by unidentified assailant who dug a hole through the wall of their house.

Kiriga says police has since arrested six people in connection with the murder. He says Lwakataka is a prime suspect in the murder. Kiriga says Lwakataka is also facing charges of assaulting Mikidadi Kabito, a cop attached to Sanje police Post along Kyotera Mutukula road as well as insulting the Former Rakai Resident District Commissioner David Kaboyo and misusing his gun.

According to Kiriga, Lwakataka is expected to appear before court in Masaka and Kalisizo today or Friday. However, Lwakataka has repeatedly denied the accusations saying they are aimed at tarnishing his name and blamed his woes on his business rivals.

  1. Is this a case of human sacrifice? Why is he implicated in the murder? Is this an influence from Nolly-hood, where human sacrifice is seen as a means/ source of wealth? What could be the motive? even if it is not this suspect.
